FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Italian designers’ year in Cairns ends on a high with ‘Delirium’
Cairns 12 September 2014 Delirium by Amy Bell OPENING NIGHT SOLD OUT 26 September 2014 – 4 October 2014,
JUTE Theatre, Centre of Contemporary Arts, 96 Abbot St, Cairns.
JUTE Theatre Company’s biggest season ever culminates this month in Delirium, a delicious comedy macabre which promises a good dose of chills along with playwright Amy Bell’s trademark black humour, and features the latest set design from the company’s special guest designers for 2014, Italian creative team Simona Cosentini and Simone Tesorieri. Throughout the bumper 2014 season, the JUTE stage has been adorned with the inspired whimsicality of the dynamic duo who both previously worked designing sets for prestigious Italian opera companies.
Simona Cosentini is a scenographer, who graduated in Stage Design in 2007 from the Fine Art Academy in Bologna. Starting out in 2003 as a stage painter, she worked extensively in set and stage design, props and dressmaking before securing the role of Chief of Stage Design in Opera for the main regional theatres in Italy. Her credits include Paolo & Francesca (TCB, 2006), La Serva Padrona and Il Barbiere di Siviglia (Operaovunque, 2007-2009).
Simone Tesorieri is a scenic designer who has worked as a stage and prop designer in Opera and musical plays and as producer for the main Regional and Civic Theatre in Italy, as well as with independent theatre companies. His stage design credits include Madama Butterfly (2000), La Traviata (2001), Don Pasquale(2002), La Boheme (2003), Cavalleria Rusticana (2004) with The Bonci Theatre. From 2005 to 2011, he worked as professional prop designer for the TCB Theatre in Bologna, and during this time also started his own independent production and creative development of opera plays and drama with Operaovunque and Teatro Colli.
The couple, who are partners both professionally and in life, took the chance on adventure when they chose to leave their established design practices in Italy in 2013 to come to the Cairns region, a chance that has well and truly paid off with a year working at one of Australia’s most exciting regional theatres, as well as the experience of a lifetime, sampling life in the tropics.
It’s amazing to come to the other side of the world and find this inspiring theatre which is producing such exciting new work, and in such beautiful surroundings too! We love it! Delirium will run for one week only, with a limit of 80 tickets per night.
The show is a deliciously gory, adult’s only experience; a seductive window on the witty and slightly depraved perspective of Amy Bell; North Queensland’s own Mistress of the Comedy Macabre. For those theatre goers who enjoy the occasional chilling lick up the spine with their laughs; come if you dare.
Delirium opens on 26 September and will run until 4 October. Tickets may be purchased online at www.jute.com.au, by phone on 4050 9444 or in person between 10am and 5pm Monday to Saturday from the Centre of Contemporary Arts, 96 Abbott St Cairns.
