FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Your Co-workers on stage!
Cairns, 23 February 2015
Stewed by Angela Murphy 6-21 March 2015, JUTE Theatre, Centre of Contemporary Arts, 96 Abbott St, Cairns.
Stewed is an office comedy from Angela Murphy, the writer who gave us ‘What are the Odds?’ “It is genuinely one of the company’s funniest productions ever……A quintessentially North Queensland and hilariously funny tale ….
” Writes Reviewer Jesse Kuch for The Cairns Post after seeing ‘What are the Odds?’ The Cairns based playwright believes that comedy is the best way to send strong messages. ‘I like to make people happy and give them hope’ says Angela.
The show’s Director, Peta Cooke, describes the show as “a bureaucratic bouillabaisse, that will make you laugh while questioning the ethics and behaviours of co-workers, and the fallout of their decisions.”
“I’ve had a lot of experience working in big bureaucracies and that’s where the kernel of the idea came from” adds Angela. Angela has created three strong characters that everyone will recognise – we’ve all seen them in the various workplaces we’ve inhabited. But Angela’s writing takes these characters and puts them in hilariously heightened situations where they are pushed to the edge of their ethics.
“This will be a great fun night at the theatre and one that will see people laughing and thinking about the situations they encounter in their workplace, long after the play has finished” said Suellen Maunder, Artistic Director of JUTE Theatre Company.
‘Be respectful to all people and care about them, that’s the message for this play’ says Angela. Synopsis: The offices of Shelbourne Harbour Institute of Tertiary Education (SITE) are infused with the business of bureaucracy and pots of Ginger Kiss tea. Moondance, a product of Nimbin parents Rainbow and Glass, has well and truly moved on from that world, to become a dedicated worker at SITE. For the last six months she has held the position of part-time, Acting Manager of The Operations and Equity Department (TOED). When the much younger Branka Radich, newly-appointed permanent Manager arrives spruiking orders to ‘shave the fat’, the hem of Moondance’s full-length skirts start to unravel.
Office life for Moondance is about to change forever.
‘Stewed’ is on for 2 weeks, 6-21 March. Tickets are available from $25 at jute.com.au.
