From humble beginnings in regional obscurity, stretched and moulded through years of hard work, fuelled by tenacity, rigour and persistence, JUTE Theatre Company has become a dynamic, award-winning, nationally regarded new work theatre company, sitting at the forefront of industry practice and consistently seeking new boundaries to explore in theatre practice.
Drawing on over three decades of industry experience, JUTE is a crucible in which new stories and perspectives are forged that inspire our communities and allow us all to reimagine ourselves through powerful shared theatre experiences. JUTE yields the floor to regional voices to examine the marginal, the unexplored, the unforeseen, to create stories that impact us deeply and change our world.
We do this through a wide range of inclusive programs of new work development, productions and touring, our Dare to Dream regional and remote tours with residencies, training, mentorship and community outreach.

First nations...stone-age primitive tribes. So it's the typical race based program. It's racist.
📣 Call Out for Cairns Actors of Indian Heritage: Join the free acting workshops for the project The Accidental Bride – A Vibrant Bollywood-Style Rom-Com
JUTE Theatre Company is seeking budding actors of Indian heritage in the Cairns region to join the free acting workshops in February and March 2025. No prior acting experience is necessary—just a passion for performance and a commitment to participate.
JUTE Theatre Company, in partnership with playwright Shoba Sadler, is gearing up for a creative development of The Accidental Bride, a Bollywood-inspired romantic comedy that highlights the cultural challenges faced by Indian-Australians. Set around a family bridal fashion business, The Accidental Bride humorously explores generational tensions, family expectations, and the clash of identities when love and tradition collide. Complete with song, dance, and comedic twists, this production —scheduled for 2026— will feature a chorus of local Indian actors and promises to be an exciting theatrical experience.
Want to get involved? Join the acting and dance workshops. Professional actor, Natalie Taylor, will teach you skills in acting and popular Indian Dance expert, Dr Suresh Kesavan will provide dance instruction. This is a fantastic opportunity for performers from diverse Indian heritage backgrounds to learn some key acting and dance skills, have some fun, and celebrate their culture.
Eight of the workshop acting participants will be chosen to also be part of the 1-week intensive creative development on April 1 to 5.
Interested participants are encouraged to complete the form at this link to register interest and secure a place in the workshops:

A LETTER FROM SUELLEN MAUNDER, ARTISTIC DIRECTOR AND CEO
Merry Christmas from JUTE Theatre Company!
What an extraordinary year it has been! As we reflect on 2024, we are filled with gratitude for the incredible journey we’ve shared with our artists, audiences, and communities.
This year, it’s been an honour to spearhead a transformation in the regional theatre landscape. Through initiatives like DARTS, touring From Campfire to Stage Light, Dare to Dream (2 plays), and productions by Perseverance Street Theatre Company, D.I.V.E. Theatre Collective, and White Rabbit Theatre, we’ve taken bold steps toward creating more meaningful, inclusive and proudly regional storytelling.
Our Write Sparks and Creative Development programs have provided a platform for emerging talent, working alongside diverse communities—including First Nations, Indian, African, and other multicultural groups—to build capacity, create powerful new works, and even develop a Micro-credential program in partnership with CQUniversity.
A highlight of the year has been welcoming three inspiring women to our team: Jessica Lamb (Creative Producer DARTS), Grace Edward (Ubuntu Theatre Project), and Amber Grossmann (Administration Assistant). Their passion and leadership are driving transformational projects that will shape the future of regional theatre.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to our incredible staff, artists, partners, supporters, and you, our audience, for your unwavering belief in the power of storytelling. Together, we’ve achieved so much—and 2025 has even more in store!
As the holiday season unfolds, we wish you joy, connection, and a moment to savour the magic of theatre and community. Here’s to an inspiring 2025!
Warm regards,
Suellen Maunder
