From time to time, JUTE Theatre Company will commission a script for production, calling upon an established playwright to create a new work. The impulse to offer a commission will usually come from a specific programming need or in some response to the arts sector; a particular creative team, an event, a location, or to support a partnership.

JUTE Theatre Company’s current commission is a new work with a working title of From Sleep We Start by Finnegan Kruckemeyer. The company has a long-standing relationship with Finnegan via our developmental programs, and have worked with him on a series of productions. We are proud to say that work he has developed here with JUTE has travelled all over the world enjoying successful seasons. We anticipate a first draft of From Sleep We Start, a multi-medium script combining text and live orchestral elements, by end of April and a creative development later in 2019.

In 2018, JUTE Theatre Company commissioned First Nations’ playwright Mark Sheppard to create a work suitable for touring through regional and remote communities with the Dare To Dream program. His work Synaesthesia Part II is undergoing a series of creative developments and will be toured in 2019.

In 2017, JUTE partnered with Debase and Queensland Theatre to develop a work specifically for touring through the Dare to Dream program. The resulting script was the Matilda Award winning 2018 production The Longest Minute by Rob Kronk and Nadine MacDonald, an inspirational story of an Indigenous rugby-league-loving family who dream of their beloved North Queensland Cowboys team winning the NRL Premiership.

2016, JUTE commissioned playwright Kathryn Ash to create a work that complimented the talents of actor with a disability, Doug Robins, showcasing his prowess with Shakespearean text. The resulting script Here We All Are Assembled was developed, produced and toured in 2017.
