Who’s up for Bollywood dance numbers and an hilarious romantic comedy? —loud, joyful, and just a little bit chaotic, The Accidental Bride delivers the fun, wrapped in saree.
JUTE Theatre Company invites Cairns audiences to step inside the creative whirlwind of this vibrant new comedy by Shoba Sadler. When a ‘serious Indian boy’ accidently proposes marriage to an ‘ordinary Western girl’, romance tangles with tradition, misunderstandings turn into full blown theatrics, and Mother is just not pleased! With the pulse of Indian music, the riot of cultural colours, and a cast of emerging local Indian actors, this is surefire theatre delight—alive, fresh, and utterly irresistible.
JUTE Theatre Company is opening a sneak peek door into the exciting Bollywood world of The Accidental Bride by Write Sparks alumnus Shoba Sadler on Saturday 5 April 2025 at 3 pm.
Shoba Sadler is a published writer, journalist, and emerging playwright of Indian-Malaysian heritage who hails from the Far North.
Ms.Sadler has joined forces with JUTE Theatre Company and the Cairns Indian Community to develop the script through a series of workshops in 2024 and again in 2025, and this is your chance to see a few excerpts and meet the creative team before it goes into production early next year.
Throughout the creative development process, members of the Cairns Indian Community served as project consultants, sharing their invaluable insights to enrich the cultural authenticity of the script’s theatrical, choreographic, and musical aspects. This year, a group of emerging Indian actors have been attending weekly professional acting workshops at Bulmba-ja Arts Centre to develop their skills.
According to Ms Sadler, the script comes from a place of delight and deep love of her Indian heritage.
“The Indian culture is intriguing and appealing globally as can be seen through hit Hollywood movies like Lion, Slumdog Millionaire, Bride and Prejudice, Exotic Marigold Hotel with a star-studded Hollywood cast, filmed in India and so on. So there is a deep interest in all things Indian to a wide audience. I’ve managed to blend the two most interesting aspects of our culture which is cuisine and textile into this screwball, romantic comedy. I’m especially thrilled to be able to offer Indians a chance to get more involved in all aspects of theatre production in Australia to contribute to the diversified story-telling that enriches the experience of all Australians when we go to the theatre,” said Shoba.
JUTE’s Senior Creative Producer, Kathryn Ash, said The Accidental Bride is a story of multicultural Australia and a stunning reflection of our times. It explores the themes of love at first sight versus ‘sensible matches’ and learning to love after marriage.
Come along and see this cheeky preview with the The Accidental Bride’s creative development public showcase and witness how the magic unfolds at Bulmba-ja on Saturday, 5 April 2025, at 3 pm at Bulmba-ja Theatre, 96 Abbott Street, Cairns.
