Read Or Not – from the AD/CEO

From JUTE’s Artist Director and CEO, Suellen Maunder:
What! It’s almost October already! Are you kidding me? What a year it’s already been. I’m filled with a deep sense of pride for the creative momentum we’ve built together this year at JUTE.

DARTS
Our DARTS program continues to energise and activate the regional theatre sector, with each project sparking new opportunities and connections. The touring show from D.I.V.E. Collective, Amorwas a unique and moving experience for our audiences.  Personally, I loved being in amongst the performers – what a way to spend a night at the theatre!

Wild Orbit Creative Development
The following week, we supported Rebecca Altaffer, one of our Writers-in-Residence, through a creative development of her new work.  Wild Orbit is a heartfelt and sometimes darkly humorous exploration of love, grief, and the lengths to which we go to protect and honour the ones we love. The play revolves around the Wild family as they cope with the death of Megan, the disabled daughter who was the emotional centre of their lives. The play had its first Creative Development and was read in front of a small invited audience in August, with actors Natalie Taylor, Matt O’Connor, Dean Harton and Janaya Byl with Director Karen Jackson.

Ubuntu
We are thrilled to see the next stage of Ubuntu, our African migrant/refugee theatre project, begin its audition process. Grace Edward has been working hard developing the program and recruiting young talent in various schools. Auditions for the program are starting, with the successful auditionees commencing their formal training on September 28th. The groundwork is being laid for what promises to be a powerful new work, set for production in 2025.

Dare to Dream
Our Dare to Dream touring team has wrapped up the Back on Track Road Safety Tour, which finished way out in Winton! They clocked up 6505 kilometres and feedback from participants and teachers has been tremendous. We’ll share more about this with you soon.

Ready or Not by White Rabbit Theatre
Looking ahead, we are beyond excited to present Ready or Not, the debut solo work from Ainslee Palmer. This emotionally charged, humorous, and deeply personal piece promises to leave a lasting impact on everyone who experiences it. Thanks to DARTS, we’ll be taking this extraordinary work to Cairns, Townsville, Bundaberg, and Gympie, ensuring regional communities can access high-quality regional theatre experiences.
